Wabi Inspirations

I have been meaning to blog about Axel Vervoordt's book Wabi Inspirations
ever since I bought it last year. Well finally, here is a sneak peak of what's to come.

Wooden tableware by Masaaki Saito

The other day I showed you a picture of some wooden spoons, made by the Japanese carpenter/designer/artist Masaaki Saito

Here are more examples of his beautiful, handmade tableware. His wooden plates bring me back to 17 century daily life in Sweden (and other places?) before china, metal and glassware was on every man's table.

I found these images (which I've edited a bit to fit this format) here
where there are lots more images of his work and studio.

Styling for sale

Isn't it interesting to see how different we present homes for sale. Different countries seems to prefer different styles. Here in Sweden homestyling (really homestaging) has become a decorating style in itself. At least on Hemnet, which is an online service for homes for sale in Sweden. As a interior design teacher, I tell my students to stay away from Hemnet. Far away! Because it is quite scary to see how many homes looks almost identical! The same Tolix chairs, the same framed sentences on the walls, the same trows and pillow arrangements in bedrooms and livingrooms, the same candle holders on the tables. I have no explanation for this, other that the "styling" is made by a copycat, with little or no imagination or creativity.

What's the situation in your country?

Here is a Spanish example that I really like. Primarily because the styling is so un-Swedish, and because of the beautiful mix of old and new.

These pictures are from Los Penascales in Spain, by architects ÁBATON. The project was awarded the 2008 Asprima-Sima Prize for best private housing development in Spain. Read more here

Black night

All well where you are?

I'm watching the grey daylight turn into black night outside my window.
In a minute I'm off to work some clay into ceramic pieces.
Later I think i'll light a fire, to chase the blackness away.

Have a good Tuesday evening all.

Loft Living Shelter Style

This Australian copper clad shelter is isolated situated at the edge
of a ridge in New South Wales, and surrounded by large granite boulders
and ancient dead trees and with panoramic views for hundreds of miles to the horizon.

The retreat was prefabricated by the builder Jeffrey Broadfield in Sydney
and then transported to site.

It has openings at three sides to provide wide verandahs, as seen below.

When not in use these roofs close down
to completely enclose the timber and glass interior,
protecting it from the elements.

This remote retreat is planned for two persons.
It has a sleeping loft and small kitchen, crafted from recycled ironbark.
